A OOAK superb large genuine Victorian period circa 1880 sky blue enamel and natural salt water seed pearl European silver sentimental locket and a beautifully matching vintage blue silk cord chain featuring a solid 14K gold clasp.
This stunning antique locket is a rare example from the period. Whilst most sentimental jewels of the time used for the purpose of mourning were black often featuring black enamel and black gems such as carved whitby jet there was a short period where mourning jewels were produced in the Austro-Hungarian empire and Germany in vibrant and beautiful sky blue enamel. The sky blue enamel was representative of loyalty, constancy, and the heavenly ascension of the deceased. Such examples are quite rare.
The front of this beautiful locket has hand engraved gilded wheat sheaf motifs representing resurrection and immortality.
The nine pearls are natural salt water seed pearls of the period. Pearls were symbolic of tears.
Inside the locket the silver also has a gilded finish and two compartments are revealed. It is lovely to see that the original Victorian glass is present on both sides.
The locket measures 2 1/16" long including the enamel bale by 1 3/16" wide by 1/4" thick approximately (53 x 30 x 6mm). Without the bale the locket itself measures 1 7/16" long (36mm). The locket compartments will show oval photos, sentimental items or portraits measure 1 1/8" long by 13/16" wide (28 x 21mm). The substantial locket weighs 22.1 grams.
The lovely blue silk cord and 14K gold clasp necklace measures 15 7/8" long by 1/8" in diameter across the blue silk cord (403 x 3mm).
The gold clasp is stamped 585 meaning solid 14K yellow gold, this confirmed by testing. The gold clasp and fittings measure approximately 1" in length (25mm).
The locket is in lovely antique condition consistent with the age and authenticity of this piece. The locket is over 140 years old. The vintage silk cord and 14K necklace is in lovely vintage condition. This one of a kind stunning locket necklace is ready to gift or to wear.
