An enormous one of a kind custom handmade unheated untreated natural deep navy blue sapphire and untreated natural white diamond 14K white gold ring circa 1950, 8.96 carats total sapphire and diamond weight.
The sapphire and diamond cluster is huge and measures 1 1/2" long down the finger by 1 1/8" wide and rises 13/16" high off the hand (38mm x 28mm x 21mm).
This is a knuckle to knuckle sized heirloom diamond ring of dramatic proportions!
The fabulous dark navy blue sapphires are the perfect contrast to the earth mined fine white diamonds. I love the slightly asymmetrical design which rises in an amazing pyramid towards a central large earth mined untreated unheated fine dark blue pear cut sapphire.
These wonderful sapphires are all unheated and untreated just as mother nature made them. Like all natural sapphires they do vary in color in different lighting conditions and lighting types. In direct sunlight they appear a navy blue, in shade a darker more stormy deep blue, in very warm lighting conditions a slight teal tone to the blue can be seen. The color of the unheated untreated natural sapphires is elegant, dramatic and very sophisticated.
The total sapphire weight alone is 7.06 carats. (The central sapphire weighs 2.00 carats, accent sapphires 5.06 carats total weight)
There are 1.9 carats of diamonds VS/SI G/H in color.
The combined sapphire and diamond weight is 8.96 carats.
This magnificent sapphire and diamond ring is traditionally handmade. These days we rarely see this quality with so many rings made using CAD technologies or cheaply otherwise cast instead of being traditionally handmade like this special heirloom quality large sapphire and diamond ring.
Inside the shank it is marked 14K, meaning solid 14 karat white gold, this confirmed by testing. It weighs 14.3 grams.
It is currently a size 5 1/2 US and is sizable within a range.

Unfortunately, in the last two decades many sapphires seen in modern jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion, deep diffusion and beryllium treatment. In recent years sapphires have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a sapphire. These treatments are undesirable and such treated stones are of very low value. The dark navy blue sapphires in this ring are completely unheated and untreated natural sapphires just as mother nature made them. This fact makes this ring a perfect choice for a very special sapphire celebration or cocktail ring.
