Here we have an astonishing antique Victorian unheated Burmese ruby and old European cut diamond engagement ring circa 1890 in 15K yellow gold.

This exceptional ring is original to the late 19th century and is not a reproduction.

It is entirely handmade.

The large unheated bright red Burmese ruby measures 7.9mm by 7.3mm by 3.2mm deep and weighs 1.5 carats. This astonishingly natural earth mined untreated ruby is surrounded by a halo of twelve old European cut diamonds of the period. These diamonds have a total carat weight of 1.3 carats

In total the ruby and diamond weight here is 2.8 carats.

The setting itself is not marked for metal fineness typical of European pieces of the period. Professional testing confirmed solid 15K yellow gold.

It is a size 6 1/2 US and is sizable.

The ruby and diamond cluster itself measures approximately 1/2" in diameter and rises 1/4" high off the finger this low profile making it ideal as an anniversary, wedding or engagement ring to be worn each day.

Rings like this from the 19th century are a rare find. This particular ring is absolutely show stopping and makes a perfect choice for a family heirloom to be treasured for generations to come.

This antique Burmese ruby ring is in lovely condition and is ready to gift or to wear.

An Appraisal and Gem Report shall accompany this wonderful ruby and diamond ring.

The photos form part of the description. Like all colored stones there is a color variation that occurs in different lighting conditions both inside but also outside, even the time of day can make the color of a stone appear a little different. We do our best to show colors as we see them. Color perception is highly individual and some people can perceive more colors than others, also colors can appear somewhat different on different screens and devices due to variations in screen hardware and device display settings.

Comment:
Unfortunately, in the last two decades many rubies seen in modern jewelry and rubies set as replacements in vintage and antique jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion and deep diffusion. There are also sapphires treated heavily with beryllium treatment to imitate rubies. In recent years rubies have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Oftentimes this clarity enhancement may appear on certificates as the note(s) “residues” or “minor residues” or perhaps “foreign substance”. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a ruby. These treatments are unacceptable and such treated stones are of very low value. We do not sell rubies with these treatments.
