An exceptional 1970s fine natural ruby and diamond cluster ring in 14K white gold.
This lovely custom made retro ruby ring is set with beautiful quality natural earth mined diamonds and a central vivid red earth mined pear cut ruby. It is a custom made piece. The ballerina cluster is beautiful and has two tiers of fine white diamonds surrounding the central fine ruby.
In total it weighs 5.3 grams.
The central pear cut vivid red ruby is a natural earth mined stone. It measures 6.21mm x 4.09mm x 2.21mm and weighs 0.50 carats. It is surrounded by a total of 0.44 carats of G color diamonds mostly VS in clarity.
This makes the total fine diamond and ruby weigh 0.94 carats.
Today there is a proliferation of rubies for sale on the internet which are glass composite and glass filled stones. These stones have no intrinsic value at all and are often sold as genuine natural ruby. The fine ruby in this setting is an all natural earth mined stone of fine gem quality.
It is in lovely condition and is ready to gift or to wear.
The face of the ring measures 9/16" long down the finger and is 1/2" wide at the widest (15mm x 13mm).

Unfortunately, in the last two decades many rubies seen in modern jewelry and rubies set as replacements in vintage and antique jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion and deep diffusion. There are also sapphires treated heavily with beryllium treatment to imitate rubies. In recent years rubies have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Oftentimes this clarity enhancement may appear on certificates as the note(s) “residues” or “minor residues” or perhaps “foreign substance”. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a ruby. These treatments are unacceptable and such treated stones are of very low value. We do not sell rubies with these treatments.
