Here we have a pair of vivid intense red natural unheated untreated ruby and sparkly natural untreated diamond earrings circa 1980.
They are signed on the reverse with a makers mark. There is a 14K metal fineness stamp.
Each pretty earring measures approximately 11/16" long from the very top of the ruby and diamond cluster to the bottom of the gold curve and they are 3/8" wide (17.7mm x 9.0mm).
Together the pair weigh approximately 6.2grams.
They are in beautiful condition and are ready to wear.
The stunning gem quality oval cut rubies are well matched for color and measure respectively 5.91mm x 4.05mm x 2.30mm and 6.24mm x 4.00mm x 2.90mm. Weighing 0.50 carats and 0.65 carats each.
These gem quality rubies are further accentuated by a pair of channel set stripes of precious earth mined ruby accents. It's a lovely affect! In total there are 0.42 carats of 3.5 point square cut ruby accents.
This makes the total ruby weight 1.57 carats in these earrings.
The diamonds also are beautiful quality excellent cut, hand set by a Master Diamond Setter, VS clarity and F/G in color. In total there are 36 of these sparkly fine white diamonds each measuring approximately 1.8mm in diameter.
The total diamond weight here is 0.90 carats.
These heirloom quality natural ruby and diamond earrings have a total carat weight of 2.47 carats.
I just adore the timeless design- it reminds me of ribbons given as prizes with the bow and drop design.

Fine quality unheated untreated rubies are rare and valuable stones and worth much more than heated or treated rubies. Glass filled or beryllium treated or diffused rubies are of very low quality and value.
Unfortunately, in the last two decades many rubies seen in modern jewelry and rubies set as replacements in vintage and antique jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion and deep diffusion. In recent years rubies have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Oftentimes this clarity enhancement may appear on certificates as the note(s) “residues” or “minor residues” or perhaps “foreign substance”. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a ruby. These treatments are undesirable and such treated stones are of very low value.
The photos form part of the description. Like all colored stones there is a color variation that occurs in different lighting conditions both inside but also outside, even the time of day can make the color of a stone appear a little different. We do our best to show colors as we see them. Color perception is highly individual and some people can perceive more colors than others, also colors can appear somewhat different on different screens and devices due to variations in screen hardware and device display settings.
