Here we have a one of a kind custom handmade mid century modernist ring set with unheated unenhanced color change natural rubies and old cut natural white diamonds.
The ring is geometric with oval cut rubies set in a layered tiered design throughout which fine white old cut diamond accents sparkle beautifully with their white color making the rubies intense color pop right out at you. The effect is stunning!
This versatile ring lends itself to an incredibly unique Ruby Anniversary ring, that one of a kind color engagement or even an insanely luxurious cocktail or dress ring.
What is extraordinary and needs to be mentioned is that the rubies are totally unique. They have significant color change in different lighting conditions from a burgundy intense red, to a pinkish red and quite honestly a definite vivid purple. The range of colors the rubies present in different lighting conditions, at different times of day and the difference outside in the sun to inside under various electrical lights is just astonishing. I have never seen anything quite like it these stones are rare indeed. Rubies do look different like all precious stones under different lighting conditions but the color differences are subtle - these color changes are definite changes with these rubies there is nothing subtle about the strong color changes that occur with these unheated natural rubies. It would not be possible to ever replace the rubies in this ring - the color change here is rare indeed such stones are not available and most likely the very small deposit of ruby was mined out long ago.
The largest ruby weighs 0.46 carats and the smallest 0.30 carats. There are ten rubies with a total carat weight of 4.07 carats as estimated in the setting. These are large stones for unheated rubies. To have a matched set with the strong color change and all unheated is quite incredible.
Unfortunately, in the last two decades many rubies seen in modern jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion and deep diffusion. There are also sapphires treated heavily with beryllium treatment to imitate rubies. In recent years rubies have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Oftentimes this clarity enhancement may appear on certificates as the note(s) “residues” or “minor residues” or perhaps “foreign substance”. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a ruby. These treatments are unacceptable and such treated stones are of very low value. We do not sell rubies with these treatments.
In total there are 12 sparkly 1.1mm old cut diamond accents with a total carat weight of 0.06 carats. These diamonds are VS clarity throughout and G color. They are beautifully cut and to me the sparkle is so much more lovely than brilliant cut modern diamonds!
The total carat weight here of rubies and diamonds is 4.13 carats.
Inside the shank there is an 18K mark, this meaning solid 18 karat white gold confirmed by testing.
This dazzling ring weighs 8.2 grams approximately.
It is a size 7 1/2 US and is sizable.
