Here we have an astonishing completely handcrafted unheated untreated natural blue Ceylon sapphire and natural untreated white diamond ring in 14K gold circa 1970.
This substantial ring measures just over 1" in length by 9/16" wide and rises 1/2" off the finger (26mm x 15mm x 12mm). It makes a big luxurious splash on the hand!
The design is one of a kind and iconic of the later part of the mid century period. A sculptural tiered and staggered design of hand textured gold rectangles cascades along the finger almost architecturally. Two rectangles on the diagonal are set with round faceted natural white diamonds these precious accents arranged in rectangles following the inside lines of the hand made solid gold rectangles. Set at a corner of each of three of the remaining four rectangles there are spectacular unheated untreated natural medium cornflower blue sapphires! The high polish and hand textured yellow gold is overwhelmingly beautiful with the fine gem sapphires and white diamonds! This ring looks beautiful and it feels well balanced and very special on the hand.
Inside the shank there is a 14K fineness stamp meaning solid 14 karat gold. This confirmed by testing. It weighs 10.34 grams.
Currently a size 6 1/2 US (M 1/2 Australian/UK), it can be resized.
There are 0.95 carats of fine gem quality unheated untreated natural earth mined sapphires (0.35 carat, 0.35 carat, 0.25 carat respectively)
There are 0.30 carats of round faceted natural untreated white diamonds
The total carat weight of the sapphires and diamonds here is 1.25 carats.

Today we rarely see this quality and sadly most "handmade" rings are cast then polished but not handmade at all and were manufactured using CAD computer imaging design software with molds printed and cast. Stones can even be cast in place and not even set by hand! That means the stones are likely to be lost and the claws are brittle and uneven. These CAD rings do not have the quality of handmade gold rings and are unlikely to be able to be passed onto future generations but rather will be scrapped because of the porosity of the metal and other factors of casting using this cheap technology. This handmade ring is quality and will stand the test of time. It is an heirloom jewel like no other.
In recent times many diamonds especially are grown in laboratories. These diamonds are diamonds but are man made. Natural diamonds are more rare and more valuable than their man made counterparts. These man made diamonds are often set without disclosure in modern and contemporary jewelry as a cheaper alternative to natural earth mined diamonds. The diamonds in this ring are natural earth mined diamonds and are untreated, which is lovely indeed.
Unfortunately, in the last two decades many sapphires seen in modern jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion, deep diffusion and beryllium treatment. In recent years sapphires have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a sapphire. These treatments are unacceptable and such treated stones are of very low value. We do not sell sapphires with these treatments. The large central sapphire is unheated and untreated as mother nature made it having been only faceted and polished!
The photos form part of the description. Like all colored stones there is a color variation that occurs in different lighting conditions both inside but also outside, even the time of day can make the color of a stone appear a little different. We do our best to show colors as we see them. Color perception is highly individual and some people can perceive more colors than others, also colors can appear somewhat different on different screens and devices due to variations in screen hardware and device display settings.
