This exquisite natural Australian opal and diamond handmade platinum ring almost defies belief in the intensity of the colors of the untreated unenhanced Australian opal and the dazzling play of color it exhibits in every lighting condition and from every angle.
Actually the photos don't do justice to how the colors move and dance across the opal. They are like intense floral bouquets or then again just like the best fireworks with clouds and splashes of layered color. Every color of the rainbow is present with unbridled neon intensity and vivid saturation - and there is so much red! The colors and patterns are layered into the opal the complexity of the play of color breath taking.
This is highest grade Australian crystal opal, one of the most valuable of all precious opal varieties.
And being Australian crystal opal it isn't affected by the problems which beset opals from other locations such as Ethiopia. Some Ethiopian opals are very prone to developing spontaneous cracks (known in the trade as 'crazing') or going dull with the passage of time or changes in environmental conditions such as humidity. No such problems with this Australian opal.
And being high grade Australian crystal opal, this opal is entirely unenhanced and untreated, apart from normal cutting and polishing it is exactly as when it was mined. Opals from Ethiopia and some other locations are often highly treated, many are soaked in plastic resins in an attempt to prevent or conceal crazing cracks, others are dyed or 'smoked' in an attempt to intensify the play of color.
This large Museum worthy precious Australian opal weighs an estimated 4.5 carats.
It measures approximately 14.5mm x 10.6mm x 4.5mm. The shape is a very slightly asymmetrical cabochon showing some natural divets to the sides of the cabochon in places. It is shaped this way because this sort of gem material is so rare and so precious that cutting for absolute symmetry might result in loss of some of the precious opal and devalue the stone.
There are six points of fine white diamonds F/G/H in color and VS in clarity.
This makes the total opal and diamond weight here 4.56 carats.
This ring is entirely handmade in platinum, the shoulders are both filigree like lace looking down your finger but also geometric from above. From every way the ring is viewed the setting is gorgeous and the opal dazzles with colors that just POP!

Inside the shank a metal fineness mark for platinum is present this confirmed by testing. The ring weighs approximately 5.6 grams.
