A gorgeous genuine antique Art Deco period natural untreated unheated ruby and sapphire ring. Beautiful, unique, exuberant...quirky too!
This one of a kind 1940s ring is of the period not a reproduction like we see mostly. The gorgeous unheated untreated natural rubies, sapphires and the sparkling natural diamonds work their magic with this exceptional flower ring. This special ring is crafted in solid 14K gold.
This stunning estate ruby and sapphire ring depicts a four petaled flower and also has a love knot motif. It's a custom made ring from the late Art Deco period.
It weighs 6.2 grams approximately.
The face of the ring measures approximately 11/16" long by 5/8" wide across the gold knot and it rises 3/8" high off the finger (18mm x 16mm x 10mm).
Professional testing confirms solid 14K yellow gold. Like so many artisan pieces of this era there is no metal fineness stamp.
The sparkly natural diamond forming the center of the flower weighs 8 points and is F color SI1 in clarity.
The four rubies and sapphires which form each of the stunning petals of the flower measure respectively 4.7mm x 3.6mm x 2.5mm, 4.3mm x 3.3mm x 2.3mm, 4.4mm x 3.3mm x 2.2mm and 4.1mm x 3.7mm x 2.3mm. These beautiful stones weigh 0.45 carats, 0.32 carats, 0.33 carats and 0.36 carats.
All the set sapphires and rubies are of fine gem quality and are completely untreated. They are all unheated stones. There is some variation to the color of each of the petals.
The total sapphire and ruby weight is 1.54 carats.
This makes the total ruby, sapphire and diamond weight is 1.62 carats.

Unfortunately, in the last two decades many rubies and sapphires seen in modern jewelry and rubies and sapphires set as replacements in vintage and antique jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion and deep diffusion. There are also sapphires treated heavily with beryllium treatment to imitate rubies. In recent years rubies and sapphires have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Oftentimes this clarity enhancement may appear on certificates as the note(s) “residues” or “minor residues” or perhaps “foreign substance”. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a ruby or sapphire. These treatments are unacceptable and such treated stones are of very low value. We do not sell stones with these treatments.
