A true one of a kind pair of unheated untreated natural blue sapphire and unheated untreated natural diamond 14K gold earrings circa 1940, 4.45 cttw, 12.2 grams, 23 x 25mm.

The design of this earrings is quintessentially high Art Deco and is reminiscent to me of both sunbeams and also a fan. They are entirely hand crafted so rare to see today!

They are a mirror image pair and beautifully frame the face.

The lovely blue sapphires are entirely unheated and untreated. They have been faceted and polished only! So rare to see unheated untreated blue sapphires today.

Each luxurious earring measures 15/16" wide and is 1" long (23mm x 25mm).

2.40 carats total sapphire weight

2.05 carats total diamond weight VS clarity G/H/I color

4.45 carats total sapphire and diamond weight.

A clear 14K stamp meaning solid 14K white gold, this confirmed by testing. Together they weigh 12.2 grams.

They have posts with omega backs which are very secure to wear and so comfortable they can be worn all day.

These beautiful earrings are true one of a kind custom designed and traditionally handmade earrings of the period. They are not modern mass produced reproductions rather they are entirely traditionally handmade. These days this is so rare!

These fine earrings are of heirloom quality and would make an beautiful choice for a wedding or special occasion.

They are in lovely vintage condition and are ready to gift or to wear.

The photos form part of the description. Like all colored stones there is a color variation that occurs in different lighting conditions both inside but also outside, even the time of day can make the color of a stone appear a little different. We do our best to show colors as we see them. Color perception is highly individual and some people can perceive more colors than others, also colors can appear somewhat different on different screens and devices due to variations in screen hardware and device display settings.

Comments:
These very fine quality one of a kind earrings are traditionally handmade and the gems hand set. This is unusual these days. These days much less jewelry is traditionally handmade due to the high cost and scarcity of skilled labor. Much contemporary jewelry is designed with a computer and cast from molten metal, the gems may be cast in place rather than hand set. These methods are fast, cheap, require little or no traditional jewelry making skills and allow for mass production but can't match the quality of expertly traditionally handmade jewelry. Hand making jewelry using traditional skills is very expensive by comparison. It is so lovely to see this exceptional workmanship. To me the one of a kind nature of these gorgeous earrings make them a perfect choice for a family heirloom to be passed down for generations to come.

Unfortunately, in the last two decades many sapphires seen in modern jewelry have had the color induced by high temperature heating in chemicals such as beryllium. This is called diffusion treatment and includes surface diffusion, bulk diffusion, lattice diffusion, deep diffusion and beryllium treatment. In recent years sapphires have been clarity enhanced by filling any fissures or cracks with molten lead glass, sometimes the glass is colored as well, with time the filler falls out or goes cloudy ruining the stone. Polymer resins can be used in a similar way. Colored coatings can be applied to the back of a sapphire. These treatments are undesirable and such treated stones are of very low value. The sapphires in these earrings are unheated and untreated making this the perfect choice for a very special sapphire celebration such as a milestone birthday, a sapphire anniversary or an engagement.
